Borehamwood is an area in the north west of London, in southern Hertfordshire. It is between St Albans and Edgware, and to the east of Watford. Borehamwood has its own railway station, and is 40 minutes away from Blackfriars. It is to the west of the A1 and about 2 miles south of the M25.
One of the earliest records of the name Boreham is in 1188. At this time it was woodland, and belonged to a group of monks. Borehamwood was mainly developed in the twentieth century. In 1909 Borehamwood became part of the renamed Elstree and Borehamwood parish, and is governed by a town council of the same name. The population of Borehamwood grew dramatically following World War II, as an area set up for displaced Londoners. As a popular area in London’s commuter belt it is still growing today.
Borehamwood has a strong link to the film industry. Since the 1920s it has been the location of many film studios, including MGM Borehamwood, Gate Studios and Elstree Film Studios. Films and television series produced in the area include Indiana Jones, Star Wars and EastEnders.
There are several green spaces in Borehamwood. These include Aberford Park and Meadow Park, which has a large playing field and tennis and basketball courts. Borehamwood is home to a number of football clubs, including Borehamwood F.C., Arsenal Ladies and Watford F.C. Reserves.
