Carshalton is an area in south London, in the borough of Sutton. It is between Wallington and Sutton, and south of Mitcham. It has two railway stations, Carshalton and Carshalton Beeches. It is about 30 minutes away from Victoria Station, and about half an hour from Gatwick Airport. The A232 runs through Carshalton, and it is north of the M25.
Carshalton was originally a small rural settlement. It grew over the 18th and 19th centuries, and developed a number of mills that produced paper, parchment, leather and seed oil. The area expanded significantly in the 1890s, when a large amount of residential housing was built.
Many of Carshalton’s buildings are listed and protected by the Carshalton Village Conservation Area. One of these is Strawberry Lodge, which was built in 1685 and is one of Carshalton’s oldest buildings. It was originally in private ownership, but is now owned by Carshalton Baptist Church.
Carshalton has several green spaces. One of these is Grove Park. It has Victorian landscaping and features an ornamental garden, a watermill and a cascade. Another green space in the area is Carshalton Park. This has a grotto, an air raid shelter, and an amphitheatre which was created out of a dried out pond.
Carshalton hosts a number of events. It has an annual Environmental Fair, which has over 100 stalls. It features poetry, crafts, children’s activities and interactive demonstrations. It also has a range of musical performances, over 3 stages. Other annual events include a fireworks display in November, a summer carnival and a beer festival.
