Canning Town is a district in east London, in the borough of Newham. It is between Poplar and Plaistow, and south of Stratford. It has its own tube station and is on the Jubilee line. It is about 5 minutes away from Stratford Station, and about 3 miles from London City Airport.

Until the 1800s, Canning Town was mainly marshland, and only accessible by boat. A bridge was built to the area in 1810, which increased traffic to the area. The North London line was built between Stratford and North Woolwich in 1846. This was built to transport coal and goods from the docks, and dramatically increased the number of people living in the area. The opening of the Royal Victoria Dock in 1855 also increased the population in Canning Town. The area was heavily bombed in World War II, and a large amount of council housing was built as part of reparations.

The area has consistently had poor economic conditions, and today Canning Town is one of the most impoverished areas in the UK. The area is currently undergoing a regeneration program. This includes the demolishing of older homes and the creation of new ones. It also involves the provision of further community facilities, such as a library.
