Canonbury is a district in north London, in the borough of Islington. It is between Barnsbury and Kingsland, and north of Clerkenwell. It has its own railway station, and is connected to the London Overground. It is about 20 minutes away from St Pancras International and about 40 minutes from London City Airport.
Canonbury was mostly open land until the early 1800s, when it developed into a suburb. The construction of the railways in the 1860s meant that people could access London from further away, and led to less people living in the area. Many buildings in Canonbury were damaged during World War II. During the 1950s a large amount of building work took place in the area. This was to replace damaged buildings and generally improve the standard of housing. The New River Estate was built in east Canonbury in 1976, and was considered by many as a good example of attractive urban architecture.
Canonbury has several landmarks. One of these is Canonbury Tower, which was built in the 1500s. It has been the home of Thomas Cromwell and Francis Bacon. The tower is well preserved and featured in Hilary Mantel’s popular novel and television series Wolf Hall. Another landmark in the area is Canonbury Square. This was built between 1805 and 1830 and has a range of attractive architecture. It was once the home of the writer Evelyn Waugh.
Canonbury has many other famous past and present residents. These include the writer George Orwell, the actress Keira Knightley and the poet Louis Macneice.
